Bloons TD: Tower Placement Strategy

Where to put your first dart monkey, the corner-camping pattern that doubles damage, why you should never spread towers evenly, and the three upgrade paths that carry early rounds.

Tower Placement Is The Game

Bloons TD is a tower defense game, but the "defense" half is misleading — what you are really doing is geometry. Every tower has a range circle, and what matters is not the radius of that circle but how much *track length* falls inside it. A tower placed at the corner of an L-bend hits bloons for twice as long as the same tower placed on a straightaway, because the bloons pass through its range twice (once on each leg of the L). Placement is the single highest-leverage decision in the entire game.

The First 5 Rounds: Where To Put Your First Tower

Your starting money buys one Dart Monkey. Put it at the first bend in the track — the spot where the track turns sharply. A bend gives your Dart Monkey two passes at every bloon, which roughly doubles its effective damage. If the track has no early bend, put the Dart Monkey where the track is *narrowest* (the path squeezes between two obstacles) so the dart hits multiple bloons per shot.

Do not put your first tower at the *entrance* of the track. New players do this because it feels intuitive ("I'll catch them early"), but the entrance is a straightaway — bloons pass through your range once and leave. Bends and narrow points are always better.

Rounds 5-20: The Corner-Camp Pattern

Once you have a second tower (typically a Tack Shooter or a second Dart Monkey), build a corner camp: place both towers at the same bend, on opposite sides of the track. Their range circles overlap on the bend itself, which means any bloon crossing the bend gets hit by both towers simultaneously. Two towers that share a bend are roughly as effective as four towers spread evenly along the track.

This pattern scales. As you unlock more tower types, the corner camp grows into a corner *cluster* — three or four towers all hitting the same bend. Late-game rounds are won or lost based on whether your corner cluster has enough pierce and damage to clear the bloons that round.

Rounds 20-40: Specialization

By round 20 you need to start specializing. Each tower type has three upgrade paths, and most towers are useful only on one path. The three upgrade paths that carry the early game are:

  • Dart Monkey's Spike-o-pult path. Turns the Dart Monkey into a spike-launching catapult with high pierce. Excellent for crowds of weak bloons.
  • Tack Shooter's Blade Shooter path. Doubles the tack count and increases range. Tack Shooters in a corner camp with this upgrade can carry rounds 20-35 alone.
  • Ninja Monkey's Bloonjitsu path. Throws five shurikens per attack. Pair with a Monkey Village's MIB (Monkey Intelligence Bureau) for camo detection.

Resist the temptation to upgrade *all* your towers. A corner camp of two fully-upgraded towers beats a spread of six half-upgraded towers, because the corner camp concentrates damage where it matters.

Rounds 40-60: The MOAB Problem

Round 40 introduces the MOAB — a large blue blimp that moves slowly but has 200 HP and spawns four Ceramics when popped. MOABs are the first round where strategy alone is not enough; you need raw damage.

The MOAB counter is the Bomb Tower's MOAB Mauler upgrade, which does bonus damage to MOAB-class bloons. Place two or three MOAB Maulers at your corner camp — the MOAB will slow down as it crosses the bend, giving your Maulers multiple shots.

Round 60 introduces the BFB (red blimp, 700 HP), and round 90 introduces the ZOMG (green blimp, 4000 HP). The strategy is the same — more Maulers, more corner camping — but you also need a " cleanup" tower for the Ceramic children that spawn when the blimp pops. A Sun God (Super Monkey top path) is the gold standard for cleanup.

The Three Rules Of Placement

1. Bends over straightaways. Always. A bend doubles your effective range. 2. Cluster over spread. Two towers sharing a bend beat four towers spread along the track. 3. First tower at the first bend. Sets up your corner camp from round 1.

Common Mistakes

Buying one of every tower. Tower diversity is a trap in the early game. Pick two or three towers and upgrade them fully.

Forgetting camo detection. Camo bloons (round 24 onward) are invisible to most towers. Build a Ninja Monkey or buy the Monkey Village's Radar Scanner upgrade *before* round 24.

Neglecting lead-popping power. Lead bloons (round 28 onward) are immune to sharp damage. You need explosive (Bomb Tower) or fire (Wizard's Dragon's Breath) damage to pop them.

Summary

  • Place your first tower at the first bend, not the entrance.
  • Build corner camps: multiple towers sharing a single bend.
  • Specialize on one upgrade path per tower; do not spread upgrades.
  • MOABs need MOAB Maulers; plan for them from round 35 onward.
  • Camo and lead bloons need specific counters — do not get caught without them.

Bloons TD rewards deliberate placement and specialization over spamming towers. A player who thinks about geometry will out-perform a player who out-spends them every time.
